"I had been bitten by the sports car bug at about age 20 and began autocrossing a relatively stock VW Beetle. Soon I decided to go SCCA racing as soon as I could. In those days, you had to be 21 to attend an SCCA driver's school. I spent the time before my birthday preparing an English Ford Anglia for D-Sedan class (sedans under 1000 cc). Back then, nearly everyone in D-Sedan was racing a Mini, with an occasional SAAB 850, Fiat 850, or Morris Minor. I turned 21 in late July 1966, and won my first drivers school's and Regional races at Warbonnet Raceway Park, which had just opened near Tulsa, Oklahoma".
